Julie Hedges
Ply-split braids, sculptures and decorative cords
Julie is an experienced weaver, braidmaker and teacher who worked in the Textiles Department at the Surrey Institute, Farnham until 2000.
Since 1991 she has been researching the Indian technique of Ply-Split Braiding, used traditionally for animal harnesses and has been developing it to make unusual textile jewellery, accessories, vessels and sculptural pieces in a variety of yarn. The importance of yarn selection and use of colour in relation to structure is vital to her work.
She has exhibited and sold her work in the UK, Europe and USA and also works to commission.
She writes articles on braidmaking and published 'Ply-Split Braiding, an introduction' in 2006.
She teaches workshops in Ply-Splitting & Decorative Twisted Cords, to groups throughout the UK and has also taught in India.
She is a member of the Braid Society and The Worcestershire Guild of Designer Craftsmen.
