Textile, mixed media and embroidery artist
I studied Textiles/Fashion at Loughborough College of Art & Design graduating in 1986 with a BA (Hons), the following year achieving a PGCE in Art & Design at Brighton Polytechnic.
I currently work as a lecturer and textile artist and have been teaching full and part time, while working as a practising artist across England, since graduating from Brighton.
It was at Loughborough that a fascination for puppets and theatrical inanimate characters began, providing the inspiration for much of my early work. My pieces continue to be theatrical, reflecting influences of the puppet theatre. Dramatic colours, shapes, structures and patterns are evident throughout my work – from hangings to jewellery, with delicate stitched textures and dramatic colours of manipulated silks, taffetas, lames and organzas.
I work in both two and three dimensions and am passionate about colour and texture, combining stitched fabrics, hand decorated papers, thread and yarns to form highly decorative and luxurious surfaces. I work with collage, mixed media, textiles and stitching, wire, papier mache and drawing – for the wall, as vessels or the body. My work is either developed into stitched mixed media pieces or embedded into paper and papier mache.
Drawing also plays an important part in my work, forming images with fabric and thread.
I spent many years living and working in Surrey And Hampshire, teaching art and textiles in FE colleges while producing mixed media and textile pieces for sale in galleries and Craft Council galleries in the south of England. I also exhibited at various venues across the ‘Home Counties and have produced work for galleries in the Midlands and Shropshire.
Since moving back to Shropshire, I have taught on workshops at the Gateway Arts Centre and at a sixth form college in Wellington, while producing my work.
Nicki’s work is currently for sale at the Silk Top Hat Gallery in Ludlow, The Arc in Chester and The Jessica Muir Gallery in Long Melford, Suffolk.
