Artist blacksmith making hand forged ironwork

I ventured into Blacksmithing in 1999, having spent 28 years in Architectural private practice; the latter 10 years as partner of a Shrewsbury practice. Artistic creativity has always been a particular focus of my life and I felt drawn to express my ideas in a more solid and tangible form. Metals became my medium and blacksmithing the art form.

The National School of Blacksmithing at Hereford College of Technology provided my training in Traditional Forgework. My final project for the course was recognised by the British Artist Blacksmith Association and I was duly presented with their annual silver trophy. My work has been accepted by the Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft and I exhibit at their annual 'Gorgeous' exhibition at Ironbridge. I have also had the privilege of exhibiting at Lichfield Cathedral and Hatfield House Living Crafts four day event. I exhibit locally at Attingham Frost Fair, Church Stretton Craft Fayre and Church Stretton Country Food Fayre. Certain shows give me the opportunity to demonstrate the skills of traditional forgework and I have a mobile forge and equipment which can easily be incorporated into most outdoor venues.

The flora and fauna of the countryside are a major influence in my work which I have taken into traditional forgework, copper repoussé and more latterly metal sculpture. I work from home in my purpose built studio and forge in the beautiful hills of South Shropshire; yet another inspiration for my work. Ironwork commissions are wholly designed and made by myself and are of the highest quality and uncompromising craftsmanship; reflecting the passion I have for my work.

Working in steel, wrought iron and copper, I can offer a range of products from small hooks, curtain poles and fireside tools to furniture for house or garden, including sculptures, gates, railings and balustrades. Work is mostly to commission, designed and made to specific customer requirements and a customer's design input is always most welcome. So, if you have an 'idea' or design you would like to develop into forged metal or if you are organising an event connected with rural crafts and are considering a demonstration of traditional forgework, please do not hesitate to telephone me for an informal chat.
