Throwing with both stoneware and porcelain, John makes mostly one off pieces, aiming for well balanced and interesting forms, favouring, bottles, jugs and bowls.
His work is heavily influenced by a long time interest in the diverse geology of Shropshire.  Deserts, glaciers and a warm shallow sea have all played a part in the formation of the landscape and his aim is to reflect this in his work by using as many local materials as possible.  Glazes are made from regional vegetation.  The ancient volcanic rocks of The Wrekin
are used both in the glazes and inclusions in the clay body.  Clays and minerals from the surrounding areas are also present in his work, through incorporation and decoration.
The aim is for both movement and texture to be present and it is when the work is finally surrendered to the kiln that the voice of each piece emerges.
